Brookings man arrested for leaving infant in hot vehicle

A Brookings man was arrested Monday after an infant was found crying in a hot vehicle. According to Brookings Police, the incident occurred around 2:35 p.m. Monday when police were called for a wellness check in the 7800 block of South Minnesota Avenue. Eye witnesses claim the baby was crying inside a car that was not running with the windows slightly ajar. 46-year-old Justin Okolo was taken into custody regarding the incident. Police claim surveillance footage shows Okolo arriving at the location at 2:10 p.m. And the baby was not taken out of the car until 2:41 p.m. The baby was taken to a local hospital, cleared and no injuries were reported. It was placed into the care of its mother. Okolo faces one count cruelty to a minor charges.
