The first Democrat to announce their candidacy for South Dakota’s lone seat in the House of Representatives has come forward. Bill Mawhiney formally announced his candidacy Thursday with the launching of his website billyforsd.com. A rural Missouri native who now lives in Sioux Falls is the executive director of the South Dakota Afterschool Network, a local nonprofit in Sioux Falls. According to his website, Mawhiney’s campaign will focus on childcare and education, rural opportunities, honoring Native American voices, and healthcare for all. So far two Republicans are vying for the GOP nomination, Attorney General Marty Jackley and state lawmaker Casey Crabtree.
