(Brookings Radio – Brookings, SD) A grass fire Sunday (April 12) burns 6.6 acres in Brookings, on the south side of the Dakota Nature Park along 32nd Street South.
Brookings Fire Marshal Jared Runge (RUN-gee) said crews began battling the blaze at approximately 12:53 p.m. Strong winds and dry conditions caused the fire to spread quickly. As a precaution, Dakota Nature Park was evacuated Sunday afternoon, and 32nd Street South was temporarily closed.
Runge said the fire damaged a portion of a fence running along 32nd Street South. He said the blaze also extended to the west ditch of 22nd Avenue South, briefly closing that road as well.
No injuries were reported. Runge said they believe the fire to be accidental in nature, however the exact cause remains under investigation.
No damage estimate is yet available.
The Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Police Department and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the blaze.
