Groundbreaking is scheduled for today at the site of what is to be the new men’s state prison in Sioux Falls. The new men’s state prison will be built on 148 acres in northeast Sioux Falls along Benson road. The state purchased the land for $12.5 million and the project is expected to cost taxpayers no more than $650 million, the most expensive project in state history. The project was green lit by the state legislature at a special session of the legislature, after Governor Larry Rhoden started the Project Prison Reset Task Force due to too many unanswered questions and rising costs that the legislature voted down the first time.
