Iconic college football coach Lou Holtz passed away Wednesday at the age of 89. His passing was announced by his family on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish X account. A West Virginia native, Holtz’s coaching career spanned four decades including stops at Arkansas, Minnesota, South Carolina and Notre Dame where he had most of his success. While at Notre Dame he won the 1988 National Championship. He was also twice named a Paul “Bear” Bryant Award winner, two time Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award winner and two time Sporting News College Football Coach of the Year. He was also inducted into the college football hall of fame in 2008.
