Head on collision in Brookings county results in medical helicopter evacuation

(Brookings Radio – Brookings, SD) A head-on collision results in a medical helicopter airlift for the seriously injured victims.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office said it happened Tuesday (June 23) shortly after 2:30 p.m. when a Volkswagen Tiguan and a Honda Civic collided on Highway 30 near 483rd Avenue in Brookings County.

First responders rendered aid to individuals in both vehicles while awaiting helicopters from Avera Careflight and Sanford Airmed. The state Department of Transportation assisted in traffic control so that both helicopters could safely land near the crash.

The sheriff’s office says the occupants of the Honda Civic — two juveniles from Huron — were airlifted to Sioux Falls for treatment of unknown injuries, and the driver and passenger of the Volkswagen — an adult and a juvenile from Ivanhoe, Minnsota — were transported to the Hendricks (Minnesota) Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

In addition to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Department of Transportation, the White Fire Department, White Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance and South Dakota Highway Patrol also responded.

The incident is being investigated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
