The South Dakota Department of Corrections announced Sunday an inmate has died in the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield. 55-year-old Joseph Schmitz died Saturday due to natural causes. The Department explained, Schmitz was receiving end of life care at the time of his passing. Schmitz was serving a sentence out of Lake County on first degree manslaughter charges.
