A Rochester, Minnesota man died Wednesday in a single-vehicle, pedestrian crash near Pierpont, South Dakota.
Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information indicates the two pedestrians were driving westbound on 130th Street in a 2026 Kia earlier in the evening when they struck a deer. They returned in a second vehicle, a 1998 Honda CR-V, and parked in the westbound lane facing east. They exited the Honda, leaving the headlights on. At the same time, the driver of a 2021 International MV607 commercial truck was driving westbound on 130th Street when he approached the parked Honda. The driver of the International tried to avoid the vehicle and struck the male pedestrian, who was standing in the road, before striking the Honda. The male pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the International and the second pedestrian were not injured.
The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary.
