Active shooter situation leads to standoff in Sisseton

(KWAT – Watertown, SD) An active shooter situation led to an hour-long standoff in Sisseton this (Thursday) morning.

Roberts County Sheriff Tyler Appel (apple) says a 911 call came in a little before 9:00 a.m. of someone shooting off rounds in a tribal housing neighborhood on the north edge of town.

The sheriff’s office and tribal police immediately responded and determined one male suspect had fired a weapon multiple times.

Appel says when law enforcement arrived, the suspect was armed and barricaded himself in his residence.

After getting nearby residents evacuated, tribal police officers negotiated with the suspect through the use of a P-A system, and the suspect voluntarily surrendered about an hour later.

Appel says the suspect may have been suffering from a mental health crisis. He was taken to Coteau des Prairies Hospital.

The adult male victim was struck once by a bullet that came through a wall. They were checked at the scene and medically cleared.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol and Game, Fish and Parks officers assisted on the call.
