According to the latest map produced by the US Drought Monitor, South Dakota is the only state in our region that is experiencing drought across the entire state. South Dakota is classified as being in the high plains region according to the US Drought Monitor along with North Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming and Kansas. Almost all of Nebraska is also experiencing drought except for the southeast corner. Most of South Dakota is experiencing moderate to severe drought while counties in the southwestern corner including Fall River, Oglala, Bennett, Jackson, Mellette and Todd counties are all experiencing “extreme” drought.
