The Brown County Auditors Office is reminding voters about the upcoming GOP gubernatorial runoff election scheduled to be held Tuesday July 28th.
The runoff is the first of its kind in South Dakota as all candidates failed to reach 35 percent of the vote.
The runoff is between Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden and incumbent governor Larry Rhoden. Doeden finished in first place on primary election night with 31 percent of the vote. Rhoden came in second with 25 percent.
The runoff election will be held Tuesday July 28th. Absentee voting will begin Friday June 12th and run through Monday July 27th. If you completed an absentee ballot application for the primary election and were mailed a ballot, you do not need to do this again. Your ballot will automatically be mailed to you within 48 hours of the auditor’s office receiving said ballots from the secretary of state’s office.
This runoff is for registered Republicans only. If you would like to change your registration to vote in the runoff you have until July 13th to do so. You may also register for the first time before July 13th. If you are registering for the first time you will need to provide proof of citizenship.
The winner of this runoff election will go onto the general election in November as the Republican nominee where they will take on Democrat Dan Ahlers.
