Education secretary Joseph Graves addresses low tests scores before senate education committee

(Brookings Radio – Brookings, SD) South Dakota Education Secretary Joseph Graves addressed low test scores in testimony this morning (Thursday, Jan. 15) before the state senate education committee.

The state’s report card for 2024-25 shows 52 percent of public school students performed at grade level in English Language Arts — or ELA — and 44 percent did so in math.

Nonetheless, the department is hopeful a teaching method called “Science of Reading” will improve scores…

Graves said they’re also looking at new math standards…

The new math standards remain under review by the state Board of Education Standards, which unveiled them this past November.
