Enrollment at SD public universities decrease

The South Dakota public university enrollment dipped this year according to numbers released Thursday by the South Dakota Board of Regents. According to the numbers, overall enrollment, which includes graduate and undergraduate students is at 35,797. Enrollment dropped at three universities and increased at three others. Northern State grew by 4 percent and currently has 3,890 students. School of Mines, South Dakota State and the University of South Dakota all decreased by 2 percent with USD decreasing the most at 3.5 percent. The Board of Regents say this could be a sign of a 2025 cliff, which sites a lower birth rate during the great recession of 2007 to 2009 and a lower number of international students due to hardline immigration policies currently held by the Trump administration.
