South Dakota residents will have the chance to hunt trophy bison in Custer State Park for a hefty price. The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Commission decided Friday at its regular meeting, more resident bison hunting licenses will be available at the cost of $6,500. The increase was approved from 10 to 12 and non trophy licenses from 20 to 25 starting in 2026 through the 2027 hunting season. No less than 60 percent of those licenses will be reserved in a lottery for residents. Trophy bison are considered males that could weigh as much as 2,000 pounds.
