South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has declared a state of emergency for the counties impacted by Monday’s severe storms. In a statement about the declaration, Rhoden says a disaster declaration can help yield better support and a faster local response. According to Hyde County Emergency Management, an estimated 80 percent of homes and 90 percent of businesses in Highmore were damaged by the 130 mile an hour straight line winds the city experienced.
South Dakota Democrat party GOP candidate Dan Ahlers has released a statement regarding the storms which damaged Highmore earlier this week. After sharing his thoughts and condolences to those affected by the storm and thanking the first responders, Ahlers he called on the state government to be a reliable partner in the cleanup efforts. He went onto say storms like this remind us the state should continue to invest in emergency preparedness, modernizing critical infrastructure and ensuring communities have the resources necessary for a quick and strong recovery.
