Gov. Rhoden announces commitment to press transparency

Gov. Larry Rhoden used News Media Day at the Capitol to recommit to transparency with the press.

Gov. Rhoden says openness and responsiveness remain priorities one year into his administration. He told reporters they’ll always get answers, even if they don’t like them.

“So I’d like to take the opportunity to you, that I won’t be hard to find. We’re here to be open, responsive, and as transparent as we can be.”

Rhoden’s press secretary Josie Harms says the administration prioritizes accuracy alongside responsiveness. She encourages reporters to provide clear deadlines and contact her directly when facing delays.

The commitment marks a shift from former Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration, which faced criticism for limiting press access.

“We are really committed to being open and responsive and within that same vein, we also want to be truthful and accurate because you guys deserve accurate information. The people of South Dakota deserve accurate information.”

One reporter said things have improved since last year’s News Media Day.
