House defeats bill banning the paying of petition collectors




The South Dakota House of Representatives voted down a bill Tuesday which would have made paying people to circulate ballot petitions illegal in South Dakota.

Proponents argued this bill would have even the playing field and not allow special interest to buy things onto the ballot.

The bills prime sponsor Travis Ismay of District 28 called on his colleague to be “warriors” in voting for the bill…

Opponents argued it would be a violation of free speech, including Representative Matt Roby of Watertown before the vote…
