A Rochester, Minnesota man died Wednesday in a single-vehicle, pedestrian crash near Pierpont, South Dakota.
Preliminary crash information indicates Timothy Allen Smith and Kimberly McDeid were driving westbound on 130th Street in a 2026 Kia earlier in the evening when they struck a deer. They returned in a second vehicle, a 1998 Honda CR-V, and parked in the westbound lane facing east. They exited the Honda, leaving the headlights on. At the same time, Simon Lee Pies, the driver of a 2021 International MV607 commercial truck, was driving westbound on 130th Street when he approached the parked Honda. Pies tried to avoid the vehicle and struck Smith, who was standing in the road, before striking the Honda. Smith sustained fatal injuries. McDeid, Pies and passenger Rylie Marie Mitchell were not injured.
The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary.
