No injures reported in weekend fire in Brookings

(Brookings Radio News – Brookings, SD) No injuries were reported in a fire that heavily damaged a Brookings apartment building Saturday night.

The Brookings Fire Department was dispatched to the 600 block of Faculty Drive at 9:26 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 for a report of smoke in an apartment building. Crews located a fire in both the basement and main floor of the building. Due to cold temperatures and the extent of the blaze, fire crews requested additional support from the Volga Fire Department. Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours Saturday night.

Brookings Fire Marshal Jared Runge [RUN-ghee] said the fire is believed to have started in a basement bathroom.

The Brookings Fire Department responded with three trucks and 17 personnel. The Volga Fire Department responded with two trucks and 11 personnel.

Runge said no injuries were reported and damage is estimated at about $85 thousands. The Brookings Fire Department is continuing to investigate.
