A bill sponsored by South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds passed unanimously out of committee last week. The Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act, passed out of the senate Indian Affairs Committee after being introduced this January. The bill places 40 acres of land at the Wounded Knee Massacre site into restricted fee status, meaning the title would be held by a joint venture between the Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes for future generations. The bill will now head to the full senate for further consideration.
