South Dakota News Watch reports, South Dakota is one of the most vulnerable states in the nation when it comes to hail damage. News Watch cites a study conducted by the online insurance marketplace Insurify. Insurify looked at factors including hail-related events, the financial loss resulting from those events and the proportion of the state’s population without the insurance to cover the damage from hail. South Dakota is ranked seventh in the nation with an average of 134 hail events each year causing $12.7 million in financial losses. South Dakota holds the US Record for the largest hailstone measuring eight inches in diameter and weighting 1.93 pounds.
