South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson has announced she will seek re-election to remain in her position. Johnson first ran for secretary of state in 2022, defeating incumbent and Aberdeen native Steve Barnett. The Republican candidate for Secretary of State is chosen at the South Dakota GOP state convention, not by a traditional primary. She went on to defeat Democrat Tom Cool in the November election. In a release about her announcement to seek re-election, Johnson says her office has prioritized customer service, bolstered election security and increased transparency in the South Dakota election process.
