Speaker Hansen talks public safety, taxes and education in visit to Aberdeen

Speaker of the South Dakota State House Jon Hansen visited Aberdeen this week as he continues his campaign to be the GOP gubernatorial nominee.

He is one of four candidates vying for the nomination along with incumbent Larry Rhoden, US Representative Dusty Johnson and Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden.

Hansen spoke about the property tax cuts the state passed this past session, which he voted for. He defended his vote and says if elected he’s not done trying to cut taxes…

This week, law enforcement in Minnehaha county have expressed exasperation with the current parole system in South Dakota. This is largely due to the state’s ongoing issues with high recidivism.

Hansen blames Department of Corrections leadership under the current administration for the state of the state’s parole system. He says there are three things that the state should emphasize with its inmates to help with recidivism…

When it comes to education Hansen says if elected governor he wants to look at the funding formula. According to him, the current system hurts rural schools and does not pay good teachers enough…

Early voting is already underway and the primary will be held June 2nd.
