State of South Dakota leads the nation in hemp acreage in 2024

South Dakota leads the nation in industrial hemp acres harvested in 2024. According to a report produced by the United States Department of Ag, South Dakota leads the nation when it comes to hemp, planting 3,700 acres, which comes out to almost 95 percent of acres planted in the United States. South Dakota expanded its hemp acres by almost 22 percent between 2023 and 2024. That lead is not expected to last though, as larger states like Texas are planting on increasing their industrial hemp acreage.
