Bill which would require more proof voters live in South Dakota passes narrowly out of committee

(Pierre, SD – SDBA) The House State Affairs Committee voted 7-6 today (Wednesday) to advance House Bill 1066.

It would require voters to prove they live in South Dakota.

Supporters of the measure say the state’s residency requirements are lax.

However, opponents of the measure say not so fast.

The bill could disenfranchise legitimate votes.

The measure now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.

There are similar bills sponsored by the Secretary of State’s Office that are also pending in the Senate.
