Former SDSU police chief sentenced to animal cruelty charges

A former South Dakota State University Police chief has been sentenced after pleading guilty to animal cruelty charges. According to Brookings radio, 59-year-old Timothy Heaton pleaded guilty to one count animal cruelty and was sentenced to 60 days in the Brookings county jail. The charges stem from December of 2025 when Heaton was arrested after five dogs were found living in inhumane conditions at a home owned by Heaton. He was originally charged with five counts of animal cruelty, but four of the charges were dropped following a plea agreement.
