Gov. Rhoden vetoes bill to ban lab grown meat, calls for a moratorium

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden is trying to strike a compromise on lab grown meat. Governor Rhoden vetoed House Bill 1077 which would have labeled cell cultured meat as “adulterated food” basically banning its sale in South Dakota and is advocating for SB124. SB 124 imposes a five year temporary moratorium to permit further study within existing regulatory framework, respect constitutional limits and reduce risk of unnecessary litigation and preserve commitment to South Dakota values. In a statement Governor Rhoden said he himself would not consume lab grown meat, but its against South Dakota values to ban products we don’t like.
