Senator Thune takes steps to change senate rules due to claimed Democrat obstruction tactics

(DRG News – Pierre, SD) U.S. Senate Republicans are taking the first steps (Sept. 11, 2025) to change the chamber’s rules, making it easier to confirm groups of President Donald Trump’s nominees and overcome Democratic delays.

South Dakota Senator and Senate Republican Party Leader John Thune said the delays have prevented the members from spending time on legislative business.

Thune says the Democrats are blocking the nominees out of “petty partisanship.”

According to the Associated Press, the Republican rules change stops short of speeding up votes on high-level Cabinet officials and lifetime judicial appointments, and it is loosely based on a proposal from Democrats under President Joe Biden. Thursday’s rules change effort comes as both parties have obstructed the other’s nominees for years, and as both Republicans and Democrats have advocated speeding up the nomination process when they are in the majority party.
