2026 primary election results

Results from the 2026 South Dakota primary elections which took place Tuesday.

As of this morning with 685 of 686 precincts reporting statewide, Aberdeen Businessman Toby Doeden leads the GOP gubernatorial primary with 31 percent of the vote. Behind him is incumbent Larry Rhoden at 25 percent, Dusty Johnson at 23 percent and Jon Hansen at 21 percent. Because no one got to 35 percent of the vote Doeden and Rhoden will head to a run off election at a later date. The winner of that run off will face Democrat Dan Ahlers in the general election

US House Attorney General Marty Jackley defeats James Bialota 79 percent to 21 percent and US Senate incumbent Mike Rounds defeats challenger Justin McNeal 76 percent to 24 percent. Jackley will head to general election and face Democrat Nikki Gronli. Rounds will also head to the general and face Independent Brian Bengs and Democrat Julian Beaudion.

Legislative races District 1 State house incumbent Nick Fosness and challenger Daniel Kjos win the primary with 30 percent and 27 percent respectively. They defeat incumbent Logan Manhart and challenger Keith Miller who each got 22 percent. Kjos and Fosness will head to the general and face Democrat Courtney Gale Enfield in November.

District 3 State Senate challenger Katie Washnok defeats incumbent Carl Perry 63 to 37 percent. There is no Democrat challenger for District 3 State Senate, meaning Washnok will run unopposed for the seat. District 3 state house Challengers Spencer Sommers and Tim Hanigan win the primary with 32 percent and 29 percent respectively. They defeat incumbent Al Novstrop and challenger Kaleb Weis who got 23 and 16 percent respectively. Sommers and Hannigan will head to the general and face Democrat Erin Ronayne Rudner in November.

District 23 State House incumbent Spencer Gosch and challenger Dick Werner win the primary with 44 and 29 percent of the vote. They defeat Amber Werdel who got 27 percent. A recount is possible in this election.

Brown County sheriff Robert Weinmeister wins the primary with 48 percent of the vote. Behind him is Dan Kaiser with 33 percent, incumbent Dave Lunzman with 14 percent and Linn Kamin with five percent. Weinmeister will head to the general and face Democrat Anthony “Tony” Sorensen in November.
