(SD Broadcasters Association) South Dakota lawmakers heard renewed calls Tuesday for stronger state-tribal cooperation, with healthcare and public safety at the center of the discussion.
Rosebud Sioux Tribe President Kathleen Woodenknife said tribal-managed healthcare could improve care while reducing state costs.
Woodenknife said similar systems in other states have improved access to care and reduced wait times.
She also urged lawmakers to support legislation recognizing tribal police officers under state law.
Woodenknife said stronger consultation and cooperation are essential to improving public safety and quality of life across South Dakota.
