Sisseton man sentenced to 35 months on assault with a dangerous weapon charges

(KXLG – Watertown, SD) A Sisseton, South Dakota, man has been sentenced to 35 months in federal prison after being convicted of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced today.

Garrett Joseph Ojeda, Sr., 33, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on December 4, 2025, in federal court.

In addition to the two-year and eleven-month prison term, Ojeda was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction stems from a violent incident on February 9, 2025, on the Lake Traverse Reservation. Court documents indicate that Ojeda became enraged over a missing television remote. He took out his anger on the victim, stabbing the individual several times before the victim was able to escape. The assault resulted in serious bodily injuries to the victim, requiring both medical treatment and reparative surgery.

Ojeda was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2025 and subsequently filed a Petition to Plead Guilty on September 15, 2025.

The case was investigated jointly by the FBI and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Law Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Ebert-Webb prosecuted the matter. The U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution under the federal Major Crimes Act, which mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in federal court.

Ojeda was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing.
