Anthrax confirmed in Meade county cattle

Anthrax has killed several cows in Meade County. According to a press release from the South Dakota animal Industry Board the deceased cattle belonged to a herd of 160 unvaccinated cows. South dakota State University’s animal disease laboratory confirmed the disease in tissue samples submitted over the weekend. Anthrax is a dangerous disease that can devestate herds of livestock in short amounts of time. The public is not at risk of infection, but farmers are encouraged to avoid making direct skin contact with carcasses containing anthrax.
