The South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office has announced a petition to repeal the state’s tax on groceries as received the necessary signatures to get on the ballot this coming November. According to Secretary of State Monae Johnson’s Office, 25,000 signatures were submitted. The signatures will now be put through a validation and certification process and if 17,508 of those signatures pass, it will appear on the November 5th ballot. The measure as written would outlaw the taxing of any good sold for human consumption. South Dakota currently has a 4.2 tax on items for human consumption. Proponents argue a tax on groceries is regressive while opponents argue it will upend the state’s tax system and require new taxes to be put in its place.
