The South Dakota Department of Health has announced the month of May serves as Mental Health Awareness Month. The DOH is encouraging everyone to check in on loved ones, friends and family this month and make sure to help anyone who might be struggling with mental health. Tips the DOH has offered individuals includes asking if a person is ok without accusation or blame, listen to what they have to say with your full attention and encouraging those struggling with mental health issues to seek professional help when necessary. The DOH is also reminding residents the suicide prevention hotline is 988 and can be used like 911 in the moment of a mental health crisis.
