After 30 years in a federal prison, Native American activist Leonard Peltier was released Tuesday after having his sentenced commuted by former President Joe Biden in the closing days of his presidency. The president did not pardon Peltier, but instead commuted his sentence from life in prison to indefinite house arrest. Peltier was involved in the AIM or American Indian Movement in the 1970s. He was involved in a shootout with federal law enforcement officers on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1975 and was found guilty of killing two FBI officers.
