New poll looks at favorables and unfavorables regarding South Dakota political leaders

A New poll released by South Dakota News Watch and the Chieseman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota has looked at the favorable and unfavorables of South Dakota’s political leaders and candidates.

According to the poll looking at candidates for political office gubernatorial candidate Dusty Johnson and US Congressional candidate Marty Jackley both have a 47 percent approval rating. Jackley’s disapproval is at five percent while Johnson’s is at 19 percent. Johnson’s favorables are down 5 percent from a similar poll conducted in April. Fellow gubernatorial candidate Governor Larry Rhoden has a 40 percent approval, four percent disapproval and 41 percent neutral, Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden a 20 percent favorable, 14 percent unfavorable, 35 percent neutral and 30 percent do not recognize and speaker of the South Dakota House John Hansen has a 13 percent approval, 3 percent disapproval, 36 percent neutral and 48 percent do not recognize.

Pollsters spoke with 502 registered Republicans between October 16th through the 20th to get these numbers. The poll has a 4.5 percent margin of error.

According to the poll South Dakota Senator John Thune has a 54 percent approval, 38 percent disapproval and seven percent neutral. Senator Mike Rounds has a 52 percent approval, 43 percent disapproval and 5 percent unsure. Governor Larry Rhoden a 58 percent approval, 24 percent disapproval and 18 percent unsure. Former Governor and now Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has a 47 percent approval, 51 percent disapproval and two percent unsure. Noem’s approval numbers are down from 51 percent from a similar poll conducted back in April.
