The South Dakota Department of Transportation has announced a plan to install roughly 2,000 miles of centerline rumble strips across the state. Rumble strips are used to alert drivers they may be veering off the road into the ditch or into the wrong lane. According to a release about the project, it is estimated to cost approximately $7 million. According to a study released by the DOT in 2022, rumble strips already installed have lead to a 62 percent decrease in collisions on South Dakota roads since being installed.
