West river man sentenced to life in prison on first-degree murder and rape charges

A west river man has been sentenced to life in prison on first-degree murder charges plus an additional 50 years for rape. According to the South Dakota Attorney Attorney General’s office 48-year-old James Jumping Eagle raped and murdered 82-year-old Reta McGovern in her Rapid City home on February 10^th 2021. Jumping Eagle has a lengthy criminal history, which the AG’s office used to argue he needed a harsh sentence due to the threat he poses to society.
