The Aberdeen City Council at its regular meeting Tuesday rescinded a resolution to appropriate $200,000 to turn main street in downtown Aberdeen from a one-way to a two way.
The Council chose to keep main street a one way after hearing feedback from the community and to avoid a referendum on the matter, saving the money of having an election.
Aberdeen City Attorney Ron Wager says this action is the same as if voters themselves repealed the resolution through an election…
Councilman David Novstrop changed his vote from for a two-way downtown to a one-way. He said Aberdeen should focus on more important issues…
Councilman Alan Johnson called the opposition to a two-way main direct democracy…
Aberdeen mayor Travis Schaunaman said he had good conversations about this issue and was proud of the community on this issue…
The money the council had appropriated for a two-way main was then re-appropriated to help raise manhole covers that are too low causing bumpy roads on Aberdeen streets.
In other city council news, the Aberdeen City Council voted to name Aberdeen Police Chief Dave McNeil the next city manager. McNeil will replace Robin Bobzein who is scheduled to retire December 12th.
