Lawmakers seek to let voters decide if Lt. Governor can cast tie breaking votes in the State Senate

The House State Affairs committee passed Senate Joint Resolution 508 out of committee Wednesday, which will now make its way to the house floor for further consideration. If passed, the resolution would put the question on the ballot this coming November election allowing voters to decide if the Lieutenant Governor should be allowed to break ties in the state senate. This comes from an episodes earlier this session when Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen attempted to cast a tie breaking vote, only to be challenged by lawmakers. Governor Larry Rhoden asked the supreme court to weigh in on the matter and the Supreme Court ruled the state constitution does in fact allow the Lieutenant Governor to break ties in the state senate.
