Rep. Carl Perry talks his priorities heading into this legislative session

District 3 Representative Republican Carl Perry returns to Pierre this week to begin the 2023 legislative session. He will serve on the house taxation and retirement law committees as well as serve as vice chair of the commerce and energy committee.

Representative Perry says when drafting legislation he listens to constituents first. According to him, some constituents want changes to the state’s minimum wage for minor employees…

A big debate which will be had this session is what tax will get cut. The state can afford a tax cut and on one side will be those arguing to cut the tax on groceries, while the other will be arguing to cut property taxes. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem promised to repeal the tax on food during her re-election campaign.

Perry says he wants to give the people of South Dakota a tax break and has voted for such things in the past. He will wait to hear the debate about which tax deserve a cut this year…

Perry says cutting taxes should be done with the knowledge the state still needs to pay the bills. Its about what we prioritize. According to him its time something be done about the food tax…
