A bill which would amend South Dakota’s child marriage laws passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee Thursday. SB159 would require someone getting married to be at least 18-years-old with exceptions. Exceptions include if both parties are at least 16 years of age they can apply for a marriage license and be granted one after a court hearing where a judge considers certain findings. The bill also outlawed marriage if the minor applicant is greater than 10 years, but that was amended down to four.
