South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has appointed incoming Secretary of State Monae Johnson to fill the roll starting in December. Johnson was scheduled to be sworn into office in January, but outgoing secretary of state Steve Barnett has resigned early to take a job in the private sector, so Johnson will begin her term this month. Johnson defeated Barnett in the primary for Secretary of State and then defeated Democrat Tom Cool in the general election.
