While the rest of the nation saw a decrease in t he amount of overdose deaths in 2024, South Dakota saw a small increase.
According to new data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, nationwide overdose fatalities decreased by nearly 27 percent in 2024. Those are the lowest levels the nation has seen since 2019.
South Dakota and Nevada were the only two states in the nation with increased overdose fatalities. South Dakota saw 88 overdose deaths in 2024, which is a 2.3 percent increase from 2023. Nationwide there were 88,000 deaths due to overdoses in 2024, which is nearly 30,000 less than 2023. The Trump Administration declared the opioid crises a national public health emergency on May 18th.
